We use Google only so you can sign in. We do not read your Gmail, contacts, Drive, photos, or other Google services.

What Google shares with us

When you tap Sign in with Google, Google sends us the usual sign-in profile. That is:

  • A unique account id. Google's id for your account, plus an id we create for you in our system. We use those ids to recognize you the next time you sign in and to attach saved data to your account.
  • Your name. Shown in the header while you are signed in, and stored with your account so we can greet you.
  • Your email address. Google includes this with sign in. We keep it as the human-readable name of the account (support, matching you across devices, and recovering the same login). We do not use it for a newsletter unless we say so later and you opt in.
  • Your profile photo. If Google provides a photo, we may show it next to your name. We store the photo URL, not a copy of the image file. This is display only.

We do not ask Google for extra permissions. We do not post to your Google account, and we do not get a list of your books or purchases from Google.

Where that information lives

Sign-in is handled by Supabase, which stores the authentication record (ids, name, email, and photo URL). The website is hosted on Vercel. Login is kept in cookies on your device so you stay signed in.

When you sign in, we can save a library of books you ask us to keep: titles you rate on your profile, and books from an Open Library CSV you upload (title, author, work id, shelf, rating, and subjects). That data is keyed to your account id so we can use it the next time you look for a book. We will not copy extra fields from Google into those records beyond what is listed above.

Book search

Finding books uses Open Library. Search terms and the subjects you pick are sent there to return titles. Quiz answers for a visit still live in your browser (session storage). Ratings you save while signed in are stored with your account.

What we do not do

  • Sell your information.
  • Use Google sign-in to advertise to you on other sites.
  • Collect payment card data.

Your choices

Sign out from the header at any time. You can also remove Marcus's Choice from your Google account under Google Account → Third-party access. If you want the authentication record deleted, contact the support email shown on the Google sign-in screen.

The Terms of Service cover how you may use the site.
